Barbara Hobot’s drawings and low-relief sculptures rely on loose trompe l’oeil, gravity, and chance to complete their composition. Hobot is interested in processes that put restraints on the control she has over her materials. The images and objects she creates can at times confuse the viewer, as what the objects are made from and how they were created is not immediately apparent. Issues related to the agency of objects and decentering the human motivate her research and process-based studio practice.
Hobot has exhibited her work across Canada and also in Poland, Germany, and the Netherlands. She has received grants from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Ontario Arts Council, including a Chalmers Arts Fellowship. The fellowship provided Hobot with the opportunity to learn about fog-catching technology in Peña Blanca, Chile, and ancient alchemy at the Getty Center in Los Angeles, generating numerous photo-based sculptures and works on paper in the years that followed. She holds an MFA from Western University, and a BA in Fine Arts from the University of Waterloo. She lives in Kitchener, Ontario with her partner and two children.
